Craig Bellamy gets recall as Wales rebuild

John Toshack
Clear vision: John Toshack has already made his major decisions

Craig Bellamy, the Wales captain, is set to return after seven months on the sidelines after manager John Toshack named him in his 35-strong squad for two end-of-season friendly matches.

The West Ham forward is expected to win his 50th cap against Iceland in Reykjavik in 12 days' time, with Wales also scheduled to play Holland in Rotterdam on June 1.

With the first World Cup qualifier in September, it is clear that the major decisions have been made in a massively rebuilt squad.

Bellamy, who has been training with Cardiff's FA Cup final squad, has not played for seven months since his last Wales outing, in San Marino. He managed just nine games for West Ham, plus three internationals, in a season wrecked by persistent groin and stomach muscle injuries that have needed surgery.

Toshack's quest for youth in his 3½ years in charge has produced a squad with seven uncapped players, six in for the first time. There are 16 players with 10 or fewer caps, eight teenagers and 13 others aged under 23.

Wales' relentless drive to give youngsters their chance will probably see seven more new caps over the next two games.Aaron Ramsey and Cardiff team-mate Darcy Blake, who are 17 and 19 respectively, are certainties. West Ham midfielder Jack Collison, under-21 captain Joe Jacobson, Doncaster's Brian Stock, Manchester City striker Ched Evans and Bournemouth's Sam Vokes will all be in line for their debuts.

There are probably only five other players who could come into the reckoning. Injured trio Danny Gabbidon, James Collins and Gareth Bale will return, while the door is still open for out-of-touch Robert Earnshaw and young Sunderland defender Danny Collins.

Earnshaw has been left out for the second successive squad, while Collins has yet to tell Toshack whether he wants to play for his country again, having opted to concentrate on establishing himself in the Premier League.

Coach Dean Saunders said: "This squad is probably the one that we will be going into the qualifiers with, give or take a couple. It has been a remarkable turnaround, and watching what Tosh has been trying to do has been educational. He lost a lot of players who retired, and has given 29 players their first caps.We have a group of players now, average age 23, who can take Wales forward."

Wales 'A' squad (for friendlies v Iceland in Reykjavik, May 28 & v Holland in Rotterdam, June 1) Hennessey (Wolves), Myhill (Hull), Price (Ipswich), Blake (Cardiff), Eardley (Oldham), S Evans (Wrexham), Gunter (Tottenham), Jacobson (Bristol Rovers), Morgan (Peterborough), Nyatanga (Derby), Ricketts (Hull), Williams (Stockport), Collison (West Ham), Crofts (Gillingham), A Davies (Nottingham Forest), S Davies (Fulham), Edwards (Wolves), Fletcher (Crystal Palace), Mark Jones (Wrexham), Tudur-Jones (Swansea), Koumas (Wigan), Ledley (Cardiff), Parry (Cardiff), Ramsey (Cardiff), Robinson (Toronto FC), Stock (Doncaster), Vaughan (Real Sociedad), Bellamy (West Ham), Cotterill (Wigan), C Davies (Oldham), Easter (Plymouth), Eastwood (Wolves), C Evans (Man City), Nardiello (QPR), Vokes (Bournemouth).
