1894: Howard Spencer made his debut for Villa in a 3-1 home win over West Bromwich Albion, thus beginning an association with the club which would stretch for 42 years. He made 294 appearances for the claret and blue troops and won four league titles, three FA Cups and represented England on six occasions. When his playing career ended, he became a director, serving on the board from 1909 until 1936.

1971: Andy Lochhead and Ray Graydon scored the goals that put First Division Crystal Palace out of the League Cup in a third round replay at Villa Park in front of a crowd of 24,978.
